my studio

photos by Stacey Cramp

I'm looking forward to springtime in my studio!  My barn will start to lose all the beautiful winter light once the leaves start coming back on the trees that surround it.  That's o.k. because the windows will be open and I'll be able to hear the birds singing again! These beautiful images were shot by the photographer Stacey Cramp.  She did a wonderful post about elephant ceramics on her blog and also included some images on her website.  I am kind of revisiting these images again!  My favorite photo of all is the one she took of my chihuahua Chi Chi hiding behind me!  She is the funniest little dog who I just adore.  For some reason she had a moment of shyness with the camera pointed at her!

  1. Michele, I ADORE your work. Your dishes have been a huge inspiration to me in my own pursuit with ceramics. I'm a food photographer and wanted to start making my own dishes to suit my style (and give them a much more "organic" feel). I have to say, I'm jealous of your awesome barn studio :) Enjoy it!

    1. Thank you, Nicole! That's very, very kind of you! I understand your desire to make your own tableware....it's a very satisfying process. Must be lovely to use your own ceramics in your photography. best, Michele

  2. Wow, it's so CLEAN. It's nothing like the potters/ceramicists studio I used to visit when I did classes. It's comparitively immaculate. and it is beautiful. Very jeolous.
I am inspired though, very inspired to venture into clay again. It has been YEARS. I visited an artist friend to day who is making spoons and hand painting with glazes and getting them fired. Such a simple idea, and not at all practical (they are very much art pieces) but so beautiful to do. Kind of like the blue spoon? yours too?

    1. Hi, Andrea! Thank you for your comment. Well, I admit I did clean up for my day of photography with Stacey....though I tend to keep my studio somewhat clean. The first ceramic studio where I took lessons was very messy with every surface layered in clay dust. I really thinks it's important to be aware of the hazards of the materials you work with and inhaling silica can cause lung disease. So I try to keep things as clean as possible. Yes, the spoon is mine. My spoons are functional and work great for serving condiments. I wouldn't use them as workhorses...say to mix up cookie dough! I think there are so many beautiful things happening in the ceramic world right now!

  3. Love your work Michele and your studio is beautiful.
Thanks for sharing your work and I admire an artisan with a clean studio. Many people think artists are messy and "starving!" Not true.
